Volvo Museum set new visitor record

Darrell Waltrip Volvo is please to announce that last year, more than 67,000 visitors found their way to the Volvo Museum in Arendal, just outside of Gothenburg, Sweden. That is a 22% increase compared to 2010. "One reason behind the new record is that we are drawing a large number of cruise ship passengers. We have also created more attractions", says Head of the museum Sten-Åke Lyngstam.

Many of the cruise ships that arrive in Gothenburg are too big to anchor at the very heart of the waterfront city. Instead, they have been given a dock some 50 meters from the museum. A tour through the Volvo history has become the first stop for many of the predominantly American, British and German tourists who arrive by sea to discover Gothenburg.

A recent addition to the museum is the Volvo Ocean Race/Volvo Golf Experience exhibition, where visitors can challenge each other in setting sails on the impressive Volvo Open 70 class race yachts, or sharpen their putting skills on the golf green. In addition, the museum staff has custom built a Volvo V50 especially for kids. With doors and pedals removed and fitted with two steering wheels, the car is designed for play.

The Volvo Museum has also expanded its conference facilities in order to meet a growing demand.

2012 marks the anniversary of several Volvo classics. The Volvo F16 truck turns 25, and the Volvo 760 and the Volvo Amazon station wagon have been around for 30- and 50 years respectively, which will be celebrated with specific showcases. This year, the Volvo Museum Day will take place on May 5. Visitors will be treated to live music and given the opportunity to watch as the 90 heavy trucks that take part in the veteran rally "Tunga Rallyt Väst" cross the finish line.

Volvo Museum showcases the history of Volvo and its development from 1927 until today. The museum exhibits products from the whole Volvo range, including cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine engines and aero. Volvo Car Corporation part of successful road train test

Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin, Tennessee is pleased to announce that the SARTRE project (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) - with Volvo Car Corporation as the only participating car manufacturer - has successfully completed the first test demonstrations of a multiple vehicle platoon

The test fleet included a lead truck followed by three cars driven entirely autonomously at speeds of up to 90 km/h - with no more than 6 metres gap between the vehicles.

"The aim is for the entire road train to be completed in autumn 2012. By then we will have four vehicles after one lead vehicle driving at 90 km/h," says Erik Coelingh, technical project manager at the Volvo Car Corporation.

The SARTRE project is being driven by seven European partners and is the only one of its kind to focus on the development of technology that can be implemented on conventional highways in which platooned traffic operates in a mixed environment with other road users.

Stakeholder dialogue

Recognizing that the challenge of implementing road train technology on Europe's highways is not solely a technical matter, SARTRE also includes a major study to identify what infrastructure changes will be needed for vehicle platooning to become a reality. A number of stakeholder discussions will therefore be held. The participants in the first discussion included technical experts, politicians, legislators and traffic safety researchers. At the workshop a number of non-technical challenges for road trains were discussed, such as legal regulations, product liability and driver acceptance of automated vehicles.

Key future requirements identified were the need to agree a common terminology for platooning, such as criteria for defining when a vehicle becomes fully, as opposed to partially or even highly automated, and the need to address multiple and varied national regulatory law or to harmonize regulatory law.

Many benefits

The main advantage of road trains is that the car driver has time over to do other things. Road trains promote safer transport since the vehicle platoons are led by a professional driver in e.g. a truck and inter-vehicle reaction response times are much quicker. Environmental impact is reduced since the cars follow close behind each other and benefit from the lower air drag. The energy saving is expected to be in the region of up to 20 percent. Road capacity will also be able to be utilized more efficiently.

About the SARTRE project :

The SARTRE project stands for Safe Road Trains for the Environment. Part-funded by the European Commission under the Framework 7 programme, SARTRE is led by Ricardo UK Ltd and comprises collaboration between the following additional participating companies: Idiada and Robotiker-Tecnalia of Spain, Institut für Kraftfahrwesen Aachen (IKA) of Germany, and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Volvo Car Corporation and Volvo Technology of Sweden.

SARTRE aims to encourage a step change in personal transport usage through the development of safe environmental road trains (platoons). Systems are being developed in prototype form that will facilitate the safe adoption of road trains on un-modified public highways with full interaction with non-platoon vehicles.

The project is addressing the three cornerstone transportation issues of environment, safety and congestion while at the same time encouraging driver acceptance through the prospect of increased "driver comfort". The objectives of SARTRE may be summarised as:

1.To define a set of acceptable platooning strategies that will allow road trains to operate on public highways without changes to the road and roadside infrastructure.

2.To enhance, develop and integrate technologies for a prototype platooning system such that the defined strategies can be assessed under real world scenarios.

3.To demonstrate how the use of platoons can lead to environmental, safety and congestion improvements.

4.To illustrate how a new business model can be used to encourage the use of platoons with benefits to both lead vehicle operators and to platoon subscribers.

If successful, the benefits from SARTRE are expected to be significant. The estimated fuel consumption saving for high speed highway operation of road trains is in the region of 20 percent depending on vehicle spacing and geometry. Safety benefits will arise from the reduction of accidents caused by driver action and driver fatigue. The utilization of existing road capacity will also be increased with a potential consequential reduction in journey times. For users of the technology, the practical attractions of a smoother, more predicable and lower cost journey which offers the opportunity of additional free time will be considerable. At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volvo will unveil an innovative gasoline plug-in hybrid. The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is an electric car, a highly economical hybrid and a powerful high-performance car all rolled into one.At the touch of a button, the driver decides how the available power from the combination of the high-performance gasoline engine and the electric motor is to be utilized.

Volvo Car Corporation's technology in the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept gives the car owner possibilities that no other existing hybrid car can offer.

"The gasoline plug-in hybrid is ideal for the American motorist who wants an electric car while at the same time retaining all the power and capacity that comes in his or her present vehicle," says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO at Volvo Car Corporation.

A diesel-electric Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is Volvo Car Corporation's first production model with this new technology, and the car will go on sale in Europe later this year. In order to make the solution viable for U.S. and Chinese buyers, it needs to feature a gasoline engine. In the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept, the electrification technology is blended with a state-of-the-art 280-horsepower four-cylinder gasoline engine.

"The combination brings the ingenious plug-in hybrid solution into the global context we are aiming for with all our car models. The gasoline version has great potential in several markets that are vital for our ambitious growth plans, such as the United States, China and Russia," Stefan Jacoby says.

Volvo Car Corporation's North American dealers welcome the introduction of a plug-in hybrid.

"From a U.S. market perspective, a gasoline plug-in hybrid would be an excellent addition to our product offer," says Patty Hooley, member of the Dealer Council of Volvo Cars North America.

"The technology in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is as ingenious as it is unique," says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation. "You can make really green progress on the road without compromising on any of the luxury car's renowned properties. No other manufacturer has succeeded in delivering fuel economy and electrical range on this level in a capable, spacious performance car with 350 horsepower on tap."

"This world-class gasoline plug-in hybrid technology, featuring a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine from our upcoming Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family, will reach our American showrooms in a couple of years. However, it is too early to say which model will be the first to feature this solution," Stefan Jacoby says.

Pure Hybrid Power - three cars in one

The driver chooses the driving mode via three buttons on the instrument panel. The buttons give the car three distinct temperaments: Pure, Hybrid or Power.

In Pure mode the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible. The operational range is up to 35 miles (charge depleting range, U.S certification driving cycle) with zero tailpipe emissions in urban traffic. The range according to the European certification driving cycle NEDC is 45 km.

Hybrid mode is the standard setting whenever the car is started. The gasoline engine and electric motor cooperate to provide maximum driving pleasure with minimum environmental impact. According to the European certification driving cycle NEDC, CO2 emissions are 53 g/km (2.3 l/100 km) - which translates into fuel economy of over 100 mpg. Using the U.S certification standards, which include emissions from the production of the electric energy, the combined fuel economy in continuous driving is 50 mpg. The car has a total operating range of up to 600 miles (960 km).

In Power mode, the technology is optimized to create maximum possible power. The gasoline engine with 280 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.) is combined with the electric motor with 70 hp and 200 Nm (148 lb.-ft.). The electric motor's instant torque delivery contributes to the car's acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds).

Four cylinders with the same power as a six-cylinder unit

The front wheels of the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept are powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine from the forthcoming VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) engine family. This engine produces 280 horsepower and maximum torque of 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.). Power delivery to the wheels comes via a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission.

"In the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept we demonstrate that our forthcoming four-cylinder engines offer the same high performance as today's sixes. At the same time, their fuel consumption will be lower than in current four-cylinder engines," says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Corporation.

The concept car carries a "T8" badge, which emphasizes the combined 350 horsepower of the high-performance four-cylinder engine and the electric motor. This moves the car into territory previously occupied solely by eight-cylinder engines.

"It's time to stop counting cylinders," Peter Mertens says. "Four-cylinder engines are the most effective way to quickly reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption without compromising customer expectations when it comes to driving pleasure and performance."

Reduction of parts, weight and fuel consumption

VEA is a modular range of diesel and gasoline engines. The gasoline versions come with direct injection, minimized internal losses and balance shafts for maximized comfort.

Several levels of turbocharging open up for flexibility that encompasses the whole range from high power and torque variants to extremely fuel-efficient derivatives. In order to cover all customer requirements, certain engines will gain added performance via hybrid drive or other spearhead technology.

The modular format is based on a standard of 500cc (30 cubic inches) per cylinder for optimum thermodynamics. It could also be used to develop three-cylinder engines. VEA offers several advantages

The number of unique parts is reduced. This promotes manufacturing efficiency, quality assurance and efficiency of new development projects.

The new powertrains are considerably lighter than present engines with similar performance.

Fuel economy is improved by up to 35 percent compared to engines with similar performance.

Modularity and compact transverse design are also ideal for future electrification developments.

Integrated Starter Generator

The engine in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept has no conventional starter motor or alternator. Instead, there is an Integrated Starter motor and Generator (ISG) connected to the crankshaft, which is located between the engine and the transmission. The ISG is capable of delivering an extra 34 kW (45 hp) during acceleration. It also charges the battery during braking.

Charge the battery at home

The rear axle of the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is driven by an electric motor producing 70 horsepower. It is supplied with power from a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed under the floor of the load compartment.

The battery pack is recharged from a regular power outlet, at home or at a parking place. Recharging time varies with the current. If 220V is available a full charge with 12A takes just 3.5 hours. With 110V/12A a full charge takes 7.5 hours.

It is also possible while recharging the car to heat or cool the passenger compartment in order to make the start of the journey more comfortable. This also means that more battery power is available to propel the car.

Constantly online

-The Volvo Sensus infotainment system in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept keeps the driver constantly updated on everything that makes the journey simpler, more efficient and more entertaining. A few examples of available information:

-Best route to the destination depending on whether the driver prioritizes low energy consumption, the fastest route or the shortest distance.

-Low Emission Zones where sufficient capacity is needed for running on pure electricity.

-Charging stations with access to renewable electricity.

Locations along the route with access to quick-charging facilities.

Mobile application

The driver also can connect to the car via a mobile phone application. This offers convenient access to a wide range of data, such as the battery's charge level, remaining range, and the location and capacity of the nearest recharging station. Via the app, it is possible to verify if the charger cable is hooked up and it is also possible to pre-program the car's interior climate.

"Creating an intuitive driver's environment that always gives you access to updated, useful information is an important part of our product development. This includes that you should be as updated when the car is parked as when you're behind the wheel," says Stefan Jacoby.

Muscular appearance

The Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is painted in a special white color and the 21-inch wheels enhance the muscular appearance. The interior features unique detailing and colors, such as sober dark-blue leather upholstery and inlays of blue-grey wood.

The instruments have been tailored to give the driver all the necessary information about petrol and electricity consumption, battery charge level, remaining range and so on.

Electric four-wheel drive

The electric four-wheel drive in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is activated by pressing the AWD (All Wheel Drive) button. Instead of the mechanical power transfer of conventional four-wheel drive, the central control unit distributes power between the gasoline-driven front wheels and the electrically driven rear axle.

The electric four-wheel drive system has been designed to provide better traction when starting and when driving on slippery roads, for instance in snow or mud.

Saves battery power for later

The driver can choose to save battery power for later in order to drive on pure electricity later in, for example, an urban green zone or in the heart of a city. When Save is activated, the generator charges and tops up the battery pack if necessary. The aim is to ensure sufficient battery power for about 12 miles (20 km) of driving on electricity.

Daily commute on electricity

An electric motor producing 70 horsepower - combined with a four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine - gives the driver a muscular power plant packing a total of 350 horsepower. Yet this very same car can be driven up to 35 miles (charge depleting range, U.S. certification driving cycle) on electricity alone or as a high-efficiency hybrid with operational fuel economy 50 mpg. The U.S. certification standards include emissions from the production of the electric energy. According to the European certification driving cycle NEDC, CO2 emissions are 53 g/km (2.3l/100 km) - which translates into fuel economy of over 100 mpg.

"A plug-in hybrid is the ideal eco-car for today's conditions," Stefan Jacoby says. "It gives a large proportion of motorists sufficient range on electricity for their daily commute. More than half of U.S. drivers cover less than 30 miles a day. With its three driving modes, the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept also offers the owner a conventional model's interior space, safety, performance and long range. It gives the driver uncompromising flexibility to cover every type of motoring need."

Vietnam Veteran Mike Reeder Celebrated As Hometown Hero

Local veteran Mike Reeder is being honored for his service and love for our country in big ways this month. With Veteran's Day on 11.11.11, he'll spend the morning with the fourth graders at Oakview Elementary sharing his story and being celebrated for his service. Mike has also been chosen as the November Darrell Waltrip Automotive Hometown Hero.

Reeder lost both of his legs in Vietnam, but he "hasn't let that slow him down", according to Earl Hensel, an acquaintance of Reeder's, and supporter of Outward Bound, an organization that assists returning disabled veterans in coping with life in America and the sponsor of the nomination for his Hometown Hero award.

Now retired he is known as an accomplished golfer, recently being featured in an ESPN report chronicling his journey to play on the old course at St. Andrews, and shooting a 79 while there.

"When we received Mike's nomination the decision to honor him was a no-brainer. He is a hero to not only our local community, but a hero to our nation", said John Gallagher, General Manager of Darrell Waltrip Automotive.

As a part of the Hometown Hero award $500 will be donated in his honor to Mike's charity of choice- Challenged Athletes Foundation, the non-profit who sent Mike and his wife to Scotland to play at St. Andrews.

Bicycle Safety Rodeo at DWA’s 25th Anniversary Celebration on October 8th

Trace Bikes is teaming up with Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt to provide children ages 6-12 with a Bicycle Safety Rodeo at Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s 25th Anniversary celebration on October 8th.

The community is invited to a full celebration from 11:00am to 2:00pm with refreshments and snacks, bounce houses, fire trucks, police cars, carnival games, and topped off with a Bicycle Rodeo activity course provided by Trace Bikes and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

A portion of the parking lot will be set up like streets, driveways, and intersections, using sidewalk chalk to draw up the area. The Children’s Hospital will provide cars, trees, stop signs, and traffic signals.

Trained volunteers from Trace Bikes will be on hand to give free helmet fitting and safety checks for the brakes, tire pressure, and seat height on children’s bikes. They will also be teaching basic bike safety through activities such as “ Demon Driveway” and “Crazy Crossroads”. Helmet safety will be taught through the “Egg Toss”, a fun hands-on activity showing the importance of wearing your helmet. Kids will finish up the rodeo with a “snail race”.

Volvo’s new “You” Concept

Volvo has just unleashed its innovative 'You' Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The new You Concept is a unique technology that can actually read where the driver is looking!

The You Concept enabled interior display screens only activate when you look at them thus making it the most intuitive car to-date. There are many other features of the You concept, however, the most special feature is the car’s electronics.

The car features a digital instrument cluster along with a heads-up display projected on the windscreen, plus a touch-screen in the upper part of the center console. There is also a touch screen between the two individual rear seats.

Peter Horbury, the design chief for Volvo has mentioned that in this You concept, they have replaced control buttons with a number of touch screens in order to make the driver totally connected and help them stay totally in control.

The center console touch screen has a hidden infrared camera embedded that when detects eye movement of the driver activates the screen. Plus, an additional sensor is also there that can register hand movement and initiates the Infotainment system’s control mode. And that’s not all! This groundbreaking concept also enables driver to flip data from the central touch screen to the head-up display. Plus, the system also enables you to exchange data with the rear seat passengers. A light guide in the free-floating center console indicates file transfer.

To inspire and impact the lives of both children and adults is a quality that most people only hope to attain. This month, Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Hero award goes to one woman who has successfully attained this level of influence. For her compassion toward educating and inspiring individuals of all ages and backgrounds, Evelyn Hickerson is named the Hometown Hero this August.

Evelyn Hickerson has been teaching for over 30 years, currently teaching at Johnson Elementary School in Franklin. In the summer of 2010 she started Gentry’s Educational Foundation in honor of her parents, James and Josephine Gentry. Using the money left to her upon their passing, she and her husband Robert started the foundation to give children in Franklin the opportunity to enrich their lives through education, support, and mentoring.

Gentry’s Summer Camp is offered at no cost to elementary age students from diverse backgrounds. It includes reading, math, technology, fitness, science, creative arts, and character education classes taught by teachers from Johnson Elementary. The one-month camp has had an extremely high success rate. Since their start in the summer of 2010, they have already doubled in size.

“This is all of Evelyn’s heart,” says close friend, coworker, and partner in expanding Gentry’s Foundation programs, Cathy Buchanan. “Her drive, her will, and her never giving up…she really is an angel here on Earth.”

In May, Cathy Buchanan heard about Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Heroes campaign. She spread the word to her coworkers at Johnson Elementary School, inspiring nearly 30 nominations for Mrs. Evelyn Hickerson – the most nominations for one individual thus far in the Hometown Heroes campaign. More Horsepower for Volvo

In New York International Auto Show, Volvo officials announced that there will be more horsepower for these models when they go for sale late this summer. They further added that both these Volvo models will be powered by the advanced six-cylinder, inline, turbocharged T6 engine that will pump out 325 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. At present the standard T6 engine in both the models produces 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque.

Volvo officials are confident that this new change will re-define these two R-Design models. They strongly believe that superior design coupled with this improved performance will make both the models pleasurable to drive. Right now the turbocharged T6 is the most powerful six-cylinder engine offered by Volvo.

To add to it, the inside of the vehicle has also been redefined to further differentiate the S60 R-Design. The driver and front passenger seat are now available with supportive backrest matched by an all-new seat cushion with deeper side bolsters. Kenny Lane Awarded as July's Hometown Hero

July's Hometown Hero award goes to Kenny Lane, former Fire Chief of Brentwood, for serving such a vital role in the development of Brentwood’s Fire Department and for his dedication to bettering his entire community.

Kenny Lane has served the Fire Department from the beginning of its inception in 1986. Since 1993, he has led the department as the Fire Chief, retiring from the department on June 30th of this year.

Mary Phillips, the President of the Brentwood Woman’s Club, nominated Kenny Lane as Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Hero. In honor of his retirement, they purchased a Rehab Emergency Trailer to use for disasters and emergency situations in the Middle Tennessee area.

Lane has chosen to give the $500 donation by Darrell Waltrip Automotive to a non-profit organization that he has a high regard for, the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home of Brentwood. “I am honored to be able to do this for such a worthy organization that has done so much for their community,” says Lane. “They have helped so many kids who have had a rough start.” Kenny has been involved with Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home throughout his career with the city of Brentwood and through his association with the Rotary Club.

Volvo Unveils new S60 T6 R-Design and Volvo XC60 T6 R-design

Volvo’s Range Extenders Add 623 miles Extra Range for Electric Cars

Darrell Waltrip Volvo, the leading Tennessee Volvo car dealer in Franklin, brings you some great news from Volvo. The company is manufacturing cars with Range Extenders - electric cars fitted with a combustion engine to increase the mileage range.

Generally, electric cars have a comparatively limited operating range due to battery cost and size. Volvo plans to increase the mileage range its electric cars by more than 623 miles. The projects, supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and the European Union, seek to redefine the technology combinations. The tests of these concepts will begin in the first quarter of 2012.

Volvo will install three-cylinder petrol engines to complement electric drive to front wheels in its electric cars. All models will feature brake energy generation and the engines run on both petrol and ethanol (E85). In the first concept, Volvo C30 will be connected with series-connected Range Extender with a three-cylinder combustion engine good for 60 hp will be connected to a 40kW generator. The power, produced by the generator will be utilized to drive the 111 hp electric motor primarily but it can also be used to charge the battery which will increase the operating range on electricity. Thus, the Range Extender will increase the range by 623 miles over and above the 45 miles provided by the car’s battery system.

In the second concept, the Volvo C30 will be connected with parallel-connected Range Extender. The turbocharged 190-hp engine provides power to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. No doubt it will yield a better fuel efficiency while driving with the combustion engine but the battery can also be charged through a 40kW generator to get increased range on electricity charge alone. Here also the same 111 hp engine is used and the two power sources churn out a total power of 300 ponies and the Range Extender increases the car’s range by over 623 miles (the battery pack delivers 45 miles approx.).

In the third concept, the Volvo V60 will have the entire drive package installed under the bonnet in the front. With the parallel-connected Range Extender, 111-hp electric motor is supplemented with a three-cylinder petrol turbo engine rated at 190 hp, a two-stage automatic transmission and a 40 kW generator. The combustion engine provides power to the front wheels and also recharges the battery when needed. The car gets power up to 31 m/h solely from the electricity alone and the combustion engine provides power at greater speeds and it also charges the battery pack. Like other two concepts, the Range Extender here too extends the car's total range by more than 623 miles.

Dr. David Vanderpool Named June Hometown Hero

Vanderpool was nominated by his son for his passion to improve the lives of others. “I have been profoundly influenced by my father and his selfless giving, and am grateful that others see him as the hero that I know him to be,” says son, David Stalling Vanderpool. From Ghana, Haiti, Honduras, and Mozambique to New Orleans, Alabama and Nashville, Vanderpool works to build the infrastructure to combat global poverty and devotes his time and talents toward worldwide disaster relief.

In 2005 he founded Mobile Medical Disaster Relief (MMDR), an international non-profit that works to serve the destitute in areas left impoverished by natural disasters and human oppression. On Tuesday May 17, Darrell Waltrip Automotive honored their second Hometown Hero, Mary Beth Gates of Nashville. In the spirit of Mother’s Day, she was recognized for her inspiring approach to community service as a full-time mother and volunteer.

After leaving HCA in 2006, Mary Beth became High Hopes’ Volunteer Accountant, volunteering approximately 552 hours annually. “Mary Beth goes above and beyond the day-to-day accounting duties necessary for High Hopes to function,” says Fund Development Coordinator, Holly Beth Roach. What began with a complete reorganization and restructuring of their financial system has now become a full-time position. Mary Beth consults with the Board of Directors, prepares and presents reports, pitches in at fundraisers, and is an advocate in the community for the organization.

Above all, Mary Beth spends her time away from volunteer work with her child. As a mother of a child with special needs, Mary Beth has a special connection with High Hopes. The Refreshing New Volvo C30 Electric

2011 XC90 takes top honors in its class at annual NWAPA Mudfest

The Volvo XC90 has been awarded yet another accolade at the annual Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) Mudfest. Already a two-time defending SUV of the Year champion (2002 and 2003), the Volvo XC90 was named best Luxury SUV by the group at its recently held 2011 event.

Up against stiff competition from BMW (X3), Infiniti (QX56), Mercedes-Benz (R350 BlueTEC 4 MATIC), and Land Rover (Range Rover Sport), the XC90 3.2 AWD R-Design impressed the Mudfest jurors with its tremendous value, sporty good looks and seating for seven.

"It's great to see such a grizzled veteran of the Mudfest competition still considered relevant today," said Doug Speck, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. "To go up against competitors, some of which weren't around when the XC90 went on sale in 2002, and still walk away with a category win illustrates why the XC90 remains one of our top sellers. This year, Mudfest was held at the DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington. Twenty six of the leading automotive journalists from the Northwest drove and evaluated 20 different 2011 SUVs and crossovers during the competition.
